The Let's Encrypt initiative is now providing free, open certificates, including for commercial use!
This is great news for the internet and its users; a more secure and more reliable internet results in a more protected user. This is a giant step forward for security and privacy online.
Adding an SSL certificate for free means no complicated configuration editing and, of course, no payments.
One of the aims of Let's Encrypt is for HTTPS to become the norm across the internet, ensuring a safer online envronment and journey for the user.
Why is it important?
Obviously, the major benefit of encrypting connections to and from a site is that they can’t be read by any third-party. It will no longer be possible for anyone to snag data flowing between you and your users from the air. Gaining an SSL certificate will reduce the risk of hijacking a connection. If a third-party can access information being sent between the server and browser, they will be able to intercept the traffic and possibly change or manipulate that information, with the user never knowing. A HTTPS connection will reduce the risk of this happening.
A certificate provides a level of guarantee that if a user sends personal or sensitive data, it is being sent to the expected place, not a secret or damaging third-party.
The SSL certificate increases levels of trust on the internet. It shows the user that as a web master you recognise the importance of security and you want to promote safe and secure functionality on your web page, as a result this gives the user confidence in your site.
